Tips and advice on caring for wedding rings - How do wedding rings stay beautiful for a lifetime?

care of wedding rings

Even though gold and silver are particularly hard-wearing materials, wedding rings can lose their lustre and suffer scratches from everyday wear and tear. Here we explain how to look after your wedding rings on a daily basis so that they keep their beauty.

Protecting your rings from wear and tear

Do you want to protect your wedding ring from damage such as scratches? Then take it off during intense activities, such as cleaning, sauna bathing or gardening.

Gold rings

To care for a yellow, white or rose gold ring, it is best to place it in a soap bath and gently clean it with a toothbrush. If the jewellery is particularly dirty or if you don't have the time to clean it, we recommend that you call in your jeweller for a professional jewellery wash. Particular attention should be paid to white gold, which needs to be regularly refreshed with rhodium. Jewellery is placed in a galvanic bath and then coated with a layer of rhodium. Rhodium gives white gold wedding rings their bright, clear lustre.

Silver rings

As silver unfortunately oxidises with the hydrogen sulphide in the air we breathe, a grey to black discolouration cannot be avoided. Our cleaning tip: a silver bath or a silver cleaning cloth.

Stones

If your ring is set with diamonds, garnet or sapphire, you can care for it in the same way as a gold ring. If it is made of sensitive materials such as pearls or an emerald, you should have it professionally cleaned by your jeweler, as these can dissolve or shrink in contact with acid, alkaline solutions or heat.

Professional cleaning and refreshing at a jeweler's

If you are not sure or do not have the time to do the care yourself, it is best to contact your jeweler. A goldsmith will make your wedding rings shine in new splendour. The jewellery will be cleaned, polished and rhodium-plated.
