Water resistance
Waterproof is not always waterproof. Water resistance specifications can be given in metres (30 m, 50 m, 100 m, 200 m, 1000 m), but the atmospheric specifications (3 atm, 5 atm, 10 atm, 20 atm) are more common. This does not mean that the watch is water-resistant to this depth. This is the pressure simulated under laboratory conditions that the watch can withstand.
It is therefore not easy to say when a watch is "really" waterproof. To help you, we have created this overview as a guide.
If water gets into the watch, rust quickly forms and the fine gears of the watch are damaged. The same also applies to digital watches; although there are no gears here, there is a complicated technical inner workings that can be damaged.
The term "water resistant" means that the watch is sufficiently protected against sweat, water splashes and raindrops.
Practical tips
- After coming into contact with salt water, you should rinse your watch with tap water to prevent rust from forming.
- The seals should be replaced every 3 years if possible. Floor seals should be replaced every time they are opened to ensure water resistance.
- NEVER operate the adjusting buttons or the crown under water.
Moisture
A fogged watch glass from the inside is always a sign that moisture has got into the watch. Even if the watch is actually waterproof, the seals on the watch case can become loose and moisture can get inside. Usually you only notice this when it is already too late. It is therefore advisable to replace the case seals every time you change the battery. However, if moisture does penetrate the watch and the watch glass fogs up on the inside, this is no reason to replace it with another model. Because even in this case, there is usually a way to save your watch
Practical tips
- If a little water gets into the watch, for example when washing your hands, it is advisable to open the watch to allow the moisture to escape. We advise you not to leave the watch in the sun or dry it with a hairdryer. It is best to contact the retailer from whom you purchased the watch for professional assistance.
