Father's Day in Switzerland
Father's Day is celebrated on different days in many countries. One of the first non-religious Father's Days originated in America. Do you know the origins of Father's Day? Here you can find out more about its origins, how it is celebrated and the Father's Day gifts you can give.
When is Father's Day?
In the French- and German-speaking part of Switzerland, Father's Day has been celebrated on the first Sunday in June for over 10 years. In Ticino, as in Italy, Father's Day is celebrated on St Joseph's Day, 19 March. This day is called San Giuseppe and is an official public holiday. Here are the next dates to remember for the French- and German-speaking part of Switzerland:
- Father's Day 2025: Sunday, 01. June
- Father's Day 2026: Sunday, 07. June
- Father's Day 2027: Sunday, 06. June
- Father's Day 2028: Sunday, 04. June
What is the origin of Father's Day?
The origins of Father's Day go back to the Middle Ages, when fathers of families were celebrated on 19 March, the day of Saint Joseph, who was the father of Jesus. It was only in 1910 that the American Sonora Smart created the first non-religious holiday as we know it today. She wanted to celebrate fathers in the same way as Mother's Day. Since then, the day, often also known as Men's Day, has spread to many parts of the world, even if it is not celebrated on the same day in all countries and has exactly the same meaning everywhere.
Men's Day in Switzerland
In Switzerland, the tradition came even later. Launched in 2007 by the Männer.ch association, it is used to honour paternal commitment. In the German-speaking and French-speaking part of Switzerland, we always celebrate on the first Sunday in June. The canton of Ticino, on the other hand, celebrates fathers on 19 March, the day of St Joseph. It is a public holiday in this Italian-speaking canton, unlike in French- and German-speaking Switzerland. However, just like Mother's Day, opinions differ as to whether it is justified or not due to its commercial dimension. But whether you celebrate it or not, it's another opportunity to say thank you to your father.
